Welcome!

Kealakehe Elementary School is excited to celebrate our 2nd year of One Book, One School, a special community event that brings our families, students, and teachers together to share a love for reading. After a wonderful first year, we are excited to continue this tradition and make reading a shared experience across our entire school community!

This year, we will all be enjoying "The One and Only Ivan" and "The One and Only Ruby" by Katherine Applegate.

We encourage families to read the book aloud with their student at home. Reading aloud is a powerful way to help children become stronger readers, and it’s also a wonderful way to spend quality time together as a family.

You can also listen to the audiobook recorded by our very own Kealakehe Elementary teachers—in both English and Spanish! Visit the "Audio Recordings" tab on our website to find the links and read along with us!

We can’t wait to see our entire Kealakehe ʻOhana come together for another year of One Book, One School!

Second Book

The One and Only Ruby is a heartwarming story about Ruby, a young elephant who is learning about her past, her family, and what it means to find where she belongs.

Ruby has grown up at the California Wildlife Park, where she is cared for by humans and other elephants. As she begins remembering more about her life before coming to the park, Ruby starts asking questions about her mother, her home, and the experiences that shaped her.

The story explores family, friendship, courage, memory, and finding your own voice. It is told from Ruby’s point of view, giving readers a chance to understand the world through the eyes of a young elephant.
