For the first time in history, Kalaheo’s junior varsity softball team went on an undefeated winning streak, not only making it to the championships, but winning the championship against Kailua High School. The final score being 13-11. Sophomore and short stop, Kyah Akiu, weighed in on the bond that is shared between the team and what it took to create such a historic season. And what ultimately, changed the game for them in comparison to last year, when they were only able to play a few games because they didn’t have enough players. “Last JV season, it was really hard to get enough girls to come out for the team and to even show up for practices. When two girls left the team, we were forced to forfeit the rest of our season.”
This year, a lot more girls — even some who had no experience in the sport got to play on the team. But more importantly, each and every one of them stayed committed. Still, most importantly, the relationships between the team members grew. “Everyone showed up, tried their hardest, and played their hearts out. I It felt like it’s the bond and relationship we have with each other that allowed us to work well as a team. We supported each other and got each other's backs.”
Kyah gives credit to not only new batting coach, Coach Harris, but all the coaches for playing a crucial role in their success. “A lot of the tips he gave my teammates and I really helped us. So practices were mostly hitting. Our hits were were starting to show promise. I have to give props to our coaches for showing up and pushing us to do our best…they taught us discipline, communication, and commitment.”
Due to the fact of the team being apart of the junior varsity, they will not be getting their own banner in the gym. Despite this, Kyah Akiu gives final words on the matter, “No matter what we won, a win is a win. It’s the team that proves our win, not a banner.”
