Here at Kalāheo, the primary mission of the school has always been to prepare
students for the real world; whether that is preparing them for college, training the students in their CTE pathway, or helping students build real world connections, and genuine confidence in their work. One such shop that fits all of this criteria in Kalāheo is the Media Shop in Room A103. The shop was founded in recent years through the hard work of the Media class- es in addition with the guidance of Ms. Mikayla, Kalāheo’s media teacher. Initially the shop only of- fered designs centered on our school. In the past, the Media shop has helped design the current band logo, the Kalāheo Girls Soccer shirts, and both recent Homecoming logos. Recently, however, the shop has expanded its business, allowing Media students to work with it, but also to
hire a select number of student workers. This has given many students the opportunity to further their experience with graphic design, build connections with local Oʻahu business- es, and get a genuine perspective into the world of media, while getting paid.

The addition of student workers has helped expand the business tremendously as well. A recent interview with Ms. Mikayla reveals that they have begun to work with surrounding ele- mentary schools, who’ve reached out on projects such as sixth grade t-shirts, and updated school logos. Additionally, the Media center has started work- ing with local Kailua businesses for the pro- duction of t-shirts, mugs, and business logos. The benefit of this business is that it gives students tremendous opportuni- ties, and it builds up lo- cal “Mom” and “Pop” shops; shops run by the parents of Kalāheo students. The Kalāheo Media shop offers a significant opportunity for students on campus, and con- tinues to build a much needed community space in relation to Kalāheo and its community.
