On February 10th, the Student Council of Windward District presented Malama Lahaina, a fundraising event that took place at Castle High. It consisted of several representatives from each Windward public high school, Kalāheo, Kailua, Castle, and Kahuku. Student Body President and Windward District Student rep, Jessibelle Kahauolopua-Young, gave insight on the charitable event.
“Every school had their booths. Kalāheo sold shaved ice, lemonade, Lanakila kitchen baked goods
We also helped with pizza and nachos.”
Featuring live entertainment by artists Crossing Rain, Liam Moleta, and Rachel Faith, it was a testament to former Windward students giving back to their community. Student performances by Ahryanna Mcgurik, Taya Junk, and Yvaine Knight were also a part of the program. “We had individual and group student performances from the feeder schools in our district as well as three guest performances,” Kahauolopua-Young noted.
“We strive to address needs in our community and supporting Lahainaluna High School– students who are affected by the Maui Fires, is a mission of ours.
All of last quarter, Associated Students of Kalāheo raised money for those on Maui by selling shaved ice after school. Something that Kahauolopua-Young stated will continue.
“Giving aid toward their student activities such as prom can help them since things have been so rough. We want to give them a reason to look forward to going to school, an event to look forward to and have fun at.”
“We want to raise money for their student activities as well as prom. We want to take away their burden and give them fewer things they’d have to worry about during a time of need.”
