At 0800, the morning of November 18th, Kalaheo’s male and female JROTC SOPS teams arrived at Baldwin high school to compete in their yearly Maui competition. Six hours later, they were declared the first place winners, having compiled a winning score in all three events.
The competition/events consisted of a three-mile run, an obstacle course, and the Army PFT, with both male and female teams competing in all events. Eighteen teams competed in total; six female, and twelve male. Kalaheo’s male team placed top three in all three of the events they competed in, and Kalaheos female team placed top five in their events.
When asked about preparation, competitor William Knight states “You just train. You gotta know what you're doing when you get there. Strength, and cardio are so important. You can't have one without the other”
These placements, acquired only by the constant dedication of the teams allowed what was a seemingly normal competition to turn into an absolutely monumental win for Kalaheo.
Sergeant Shields, who helped lead both teams to victory, states “This year it's done, but next year is always next year. You know I'm really happy with them. As for room for improvement, no, I think they set their minds on what they wanted to do, and they went and did it.”
Congratulations to Kalaheo’s ROTC.
