Welcome to the KES English Learners (ELs) Portal for SY 2025-26!
Aloha Parents of English Learners (ELs),
The WIDA ACCESS (EL annual Test) window is from January 12 - February 27. During this time, all ELs will be tested on each of the 4 language domains: listening, reading, speaking and writing. ELs in kindergarten will take one test with all domains included, while ELs in grades 1 - 5, will take four separate tests, one for each domain. The night prior to the test, please make sure your child(ren) get a good night's rest. The morning of the test, please make sure your child(ren) eat a healthy and hearty breakfast, and are on time to school. The results of the test will be sent home in May.
Open House will be held on Wednesday, February 4. Games with prizes will be held in the cafeteria from 1:30 - 2:00. Classroom visitations will be held from 2:00 - 4:00 pm. Be sure to stop by the EL Resource Room in TB6 before or after visiting your child(ren)'s classroom. At Open House, we will be kicking off our mini unit on the countries/cultures of the ELs by taking a "trip" to the Philippines! You can view a slide show to learn a little bit about the Philippines, as well as roll your own Banana Lumpia (Turon), a sweet and crispy treat. Yum! I will also be sending out a survey, so that I may plan for other countries/cultures.
Selected ELs will be participating in the EL After-School Program on Tuesdays & Thursdays from Tuesday, February 3 through Tuesday, March 10 from 2:00 - 3:00 pm. During this time, they will be utilizing an award-winning software called, Imagine Language and Literacy, as well as participating in individual / small group guided reading. After school, participating ELs will walk straight to the EL Resource Room. At 3:00, I will walk the ELs up the the front loop and release those given permission to walk home. I will supervise the rest until they are picked up. If picking up your child, please do so by 3:15.
Please continue to share stories, as well as sing songs from your first language. These rich cultural and linguistic interactions can bolster your children’s sense of themselves and their primary language skills. Research supports that ultimately it is easier to master a second language (English), and school learning when the primary language, culture, and sense of identity are stronger.
As always, should you have any questions / concerns, please feel free to call or email me. Have a wonderful day. 😀
Mahalo,
