To demonstrate my support and gratitude towards healthcare workers, I will write cards each week / every other week for frontline workers at different local hospitals, nursing homes, and testing sites to boost morale and display kindness within my "Glocal" community.
In this Ted Talk, Dr. Regina Chow Trammel explores how the ancient practices of mindfulness can enable all of us to transcend the pressures of life. Mindfulness is the ability to stay in the present moment so you can focus on your thoughts non-judgementally.
My greatest takeaway from the Ted Talk is that there are three reasons why mindfulness builds your capacity to take on stresses in a healthy way. The first is that mindfulness helps you experience health differently. The second is that mindfulness helps you make better decisions. The third is that mindfulness fosters wellness.
I believe that incorporating mindfulness into my everyday routine will give me the tools to stay calm, remain present in the moment, and the ability to evaluate my feelings in a productive way. Mindfulness will help me to clarify my thoughts, prioritize my values, and act in a way that is congruent to who I am as an individual. It is a practice intended to help prevent me from burning out from the stresses of life and will allow me to be more compassionate, collaborative, empathetic, and self-aware.
At this portal connection, I will have the opportunity to discuss with people from communities around the world and learn about how their lives have been impacted by COVID-19. Additionally, I will be able to share my personal experiences and compare/ contrast the differences in our everyday lives.
This April I got to attend my second global summit VIRTUALLY! The theme of the summit was "Good Health & Well-Being, focusing on UN Sustainable Goal #3.
I started off the day by meeting my fellow scholars on "The Stage", a google meet located on the Virtual Summit Website. It was so fun to see everyone in their global summit t-shirts that we picked up earlier in the week. We went over the plan for the day, then broke out into our teams. I was a team co-leader with Emily, and Lizzie, Elise, Mackenzie, and Shreya were on our team. We discussed what we were looking forward to for the game then logged onto our first workshop!
My first workshop was called "Art Mural" and was with Mrs. Kuhlman. We got to color in pieces of a mural (found in our swag bags) to hang up in AHS. I loved being able to relax, color, and have good conversations with the others in the workshop!
Next, we met back on "The Stage" and listened to the Keynote Speaker Dr. Brian Labodie. It was super interesting to listen to him discuss his experience and recite his insight knowledge on the pandemic.
My second workshop was "Meditation" with Mr. McCarthy. Together, my fellow scholars and I completed a meditation lead by Mr. McCarthy and reflected on the benefits of meditation. The workshop left me in the perfect mindset for my 3rd Workshop, "Spring Renewal Yoga" with Ms. Salvensen!
My favorite part of the day was definitely the Design Challenge. Together, my group and I created a plan which we called "Symbiotic Solutions" which dealt with helping the Boston homeless population.
Although I missed seeing my fellow scholars in person, I had a lot of fun at my last AHS summit and thought it was the best possible summit we could have had virtually!
This March I had my first opportunity to attend Andover High School's 4th annual Global Summit at the AYS Youth Center in downtown Andover! This year's theme for the summit was "A Cleaner Earth". Some of the UN sustainable goals we focused on were #6 "Clean Water and Sanitation", #13 "Climate Action, #14 "Life Below Water", and #15 "Life on Land". We started the day with a series of ice breakers and break out sessions where my fellow classmates and I got to know one another better, and talk about issues regarding our planet earth. It was awesome to meet new people and interact with everyone about the same central topic, and discuss ways on how to achieve "A Cleaner Earth".
The second half of the day was dedicated to the "Global Design Challenge". We were split into groups and challenged with the task to create a product/ idea that would connect with one of the UN Global Goals. My group decided to focus on goal #14, "Life Below Water". Our goal was to create a prototype of a product that would collect trash and waste from the ocean and bring it back to land to be disposed of properly. We created a model of a boat with filters underneath, which were designed to catch trash and compile it into a net below the boat. As we worked on our project, I thought a lot about he importance of keeping our oceans clean to protect the life below water.
This year's summit was an awesome opportunity for me to expand my horizons on the goal of keeping our earth clean. Being a part of this experience was very powerful, and taught me how important my individual commitment to keeping our world clean is, and how the little things I can do make an impact.
This H Block was run by sophomore global scholar Meredith Williamson. She informed us on what is currently happening in Australia, where wildfires are destroying homes, buildings, schools, animal lives, human lives and most importantly our environment. Aside from learning about this tragic issue, we brainstormed in groups ways in which we can help here in the United States.
This H Block was run by some of the Global Pathway cohort advisors. We had a variety of breakout sessions where we decorated cookies, wrote letters to send to troops who will be away for the holidays, and played holiday trivia. All these glocal activities were lots of fun!
This H Block was run by Mrs. Gupte, a science teacher here at Andover High School! Mrs. Gupte taught us about what henna is, where it comes from, and what it is used for. Henna is made using the powdered leaves of a tropical shrub, and is used as a dye to color the hair and decorate the body. We got to use real henna during this H Block to practice painting designs on each other! There was also a portal connection taking place, where we got to learn from henna experts from across the world all about the beautiful art.
