What is the Sixth Form Dress Code?
We expect you to be smartly dressed in a suit as though working in a traditional office, meaning no jeans or denim. We will send students home who we perceive are not suitably dressed. Remember, Sixth Formers act as role models to all other students. Please see below the link to the Judd Sixth Form Dress Code for more specific details.
Where can I study for non-contact lessons?
You can use the Sixth Form Study Centre or library; both are supervised quiet rooms with computers.
What musical opportunities are there at Judd?
We are keen to encourage and support our students in the widest possible range of musical activities, both within and beyond the usual curricular music lessons. Many pupils are involved in musical activities on a weekly basis. These include:
4 Choirs, 2 Orchestras, String Orchestra, Wind Band, Brass group, Samba Band, Big Band, and Rockistry (an after-hours rock school).
Regular concerts are given throughout the year. There are occasional small-scale concerts, Battle of the Bands and a House Music competition at which pupils of all ages are invited to play. Membership of all choirs, ensembles and orchestras is open to all pupils of the school, whether or not they have music lessons in school. The music practice rooms and the recording facilities can be used with permission by both rock groups and classical ensembles. There are many groups which may be particularly suited to sixth formers:
Judd Winds – Monday
Big Band – Tuesday - lunch time
Chamber Choir – Tuesday after school
String Orchestra – Thursday - lunch time
Symphony Orchestra – Thursday - after school
School Choir – Friday - lunch time
It is hoped to involve as many pupils as possible in music making at Judd and it would be helpful for the Head of Music to know, in advance, of those with musical experience (instrumental, choirs, etc.) and those wishing to pursue instrumental lessons through the school. Upon receiving a formal offer please contact our Head of Music, Miss Balcombe rbalcombe@judd.kent.sch.uk
Who should apply to Oxbridge?
Oxbridge - Oxford and Cambridge are aspirational targets for many and we support these aspirations. In recent years, around half of Year 13 achieve 3 x A/A* grades at A Level and typically around 20 take up places at Oxford or Cambridge. The most significant factors in gaining an offer are:
▪ Year 12 grades – 3 or 4 very strong grades in external or internal exams
▪ GCSE grades – at least 6 A*
▪ Interview – ability to engage in interesting dialogue or work in subject area of choice
▪ Personal Statement – demonstration of independence of thought, motivation, passion, self instigated personal development
▪ School Reference
It is very difficult, but not impossible, to support applicants who achieve below 6 A* at GCSE or 4 high A grades in our internal exams in Year 12. We are obliged to provide references based on what students have shown us they can do and not what they think they can do
When can I apply for a position of responsibility?
In the Autumn Term of Year 12 we encourage students to become ‘Form Mentors’, this means that one day a week you and a small group from your Y12 form will visit the lower school forms to do activities with them. In the Spring Term you can also apply to be Head Boy or Head Girl, and there are other House and Subject Prefect roles.
Can I have a part time job and study A Levels?
Students are allowed to work part time outside of school hours. We recommend not working more than 12 hours maximum per week.
Driving Lessons?
We will allow you to leave school for driving lessons in the afternoon in a free period. Please remember to sign in and out on the iPad in student reception.
