Below are the different types of licenses issued to Beginning Teachers. Most Beginning Teachers' licensure goal is to be able to eventually convert the license initially issued to a Continuing Standard Professional II (SP2) License unless the license initially issued was a CTE License. Beginning Teachers become eligible to apply for an SP2 License after three years of teaching full-time, completing all JCPS BT requirements, and completing any additional requirements determined by DPI.
Licenses Issued to Beginning Teachers Who Have Completed an Educator Preparation Program (EPP)
Beginning Teachers who completed an undergraduate degree in education or a MAT program at a North Carolina college/university are issued a clear Initial License , also referred to as a Standard Professional I (SP1) License. Typically, teachers who are issued this type of license do not require any additional testing to be eligible to convert to a continuing license (SP2) after three years of teaching. DPI and the JCPS Licensure Department inform BTs if they are required to pass any additional tests.
Beginning Teachers who completed an undergraduate degree in education or a MAT program at an out-of-state college/university are issued an Initial Out-of-State License. Typically, teachers who are issued this type of license are required to complete additional testing to be eligible to convert to a continuing license (SP2) after three years of teaching. DPI and the JCPS Licensure Department inform BTs what additional tests they need to pass.
Beginning Teachers who completed an undergraduate degree in education or a MAT program but have been hired to teach a grade or subject area outside of their initial license are issued a Provisional License. BTs with this type of license must pass additional testing within 4 years to add on the new grades/subject area(s) to their license. DPI and the JCPS Licensure Department inform BTs what additional tests they need to pass.
Licenses Issued to Beginning Teachers Who Are Pursuing an Alternative Pathway to Licensure
Beginning Teachers who did not complete their undergraduate or graduate degree in education may be issued a Permit to Teach. BTs with this type of license are notified of the requirements they must complete by the end of the school year to be issued a Residency License.
Beginning Teachers who did not complete their undergraduate or graduate degree in education may be issued an Emergency License. BTs with this type of license are notified of the requirements they must complete by the end of the school year to be issued a Residency License.
Once a Beginning Teacher successfully enrolls in an approved Residency Program, they can apply for a Residency License. BTs with this type of license must complete all coursework and required testing within three school years to be eligible to convert to a continuing license (SP2).
Beginning Teachers hired to teach a CTE course and meet the prerequisites or BTs hired to teach JROTC are issued a CTE License. BTs with this type of license are notified of any additional requirements they must complete during their first three years of teaching.
