Welcome to Earth & Environmental Science

Teacher

Hi! My name is April Bernier and this is my eleventh year teaching. I grew up in Rhode Island and earned my Bachelor of Arts in Biological Sciences from Smith College in 2006. I taught for six years in Rhode Island before moving to North Carolina in 2015. Since then, I have taught at Johnston County Early College Academy, Innovation Academy, Wake Early College of Health and Sciences, and Riverwood Middle School. Now I am excited to be part of the science department at Clayton High School!

When I'm not teaching, I enjoy reading, biking, woodworking, camping, and spending time with my family.

Teaching Philosophy

When I teach, I view myself primarily as a learning coach. I provide resources and guidance, assist students in evaluating their ideas, and give feedback on progress. Science is an active pursuit, and I expect student to take the reins and drive their own learning. I view struggle as a necessary experience in the process of growth. My approach centers largely around Project Based Learning, in which student learn through engagement in authentic, engaging, complex tasks, and gamification, in which elements of game design are applied to the learning experience to help students self-motivate and self-assess. As a general rule, I record grades for assignments that measure students’ learning, but not for learning activities.
