I was born and raised in Jerome. I attended both the College of Southern Idaho and Idaho State University, where I earned a degree in Psychology. I returned to Jerome and went to work doing behavior therapy with children with special needs. Over time, I realized I wished to do what I loved doing most-TEACHING. I am teaching ELA and Reading this year and I am excited to get to know you. In my free time, I enjoy reading, playing piano, and spending time with my family and fur babies.

Course Overview:
This year in English Language Arts we will be studying the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for Reading, Writing, Language, Speaking, and Listening Skills. These standards may be viewed on the following link: http://www.corestandards.org/ELA-Literacy/L/6/
Classroom Rules and Expectations:
These expectations are in addition to the rules outlined in the student agenda. In my classroom I expect every student to:
Be Respectful: use appropriate words and voices (no yelling or profanity), use good and appropriate manners (please, thank you, raising your hand, asking permission, etc.), and listen to your teacher and classmates when they are speaking.
Be Responsible: come to class on time, have all materials, supplies, and homework ready, take care of your belongings and school equipment, clean up after yourself, stay on task, turn in work on time, and accept consequences for your behavior appropriately.
Be a Good Worker: complete work asked of you, follow directions from staff, enter ready to learn, work hard and always do your best.
Above all else:
Be Kind: be kind, polite and courteous to others. Treat others the way you would want to be treated. Express your opinion in a nice way even if you disagree. Don’t be rude. Believe in yourself.
Rule Enforcement/Discipline
1st Time-Reprimand-A verbal warning will be given to the student.
2nd Time-Reprimand and “Stop and Think” Sheet-Another verbal warning and student will be required to fill out a “Stop and Think” Sheet before leaving class.
3rd Time-Referral to PASS room-student will be referred to PASS room for further action and a call home will be made.
There will be an automatic referral if a name is left by a substitute teacher for failure to follow rules or in an extreme behavior.
Immediate Action: The following offenses will result in an immediate parent/teacher/student conference or referral: lying (not telling the truth), cheating (deceiving), stealing (taking things that are not yours), fighting (verbal or physical struggle), and bullying (treating a person cruelly, insulting, threatening or in an aggressive way). These behaviors are not acceptable at any time in the classroom and the student will not be allowed to participate in class activities until appropriate measures have been taken to ensure it will not happen again. Students must also follow the JMS policies for discipline referrals.
Grades:
Grades are based on students’ ability to master the variety of standards set out by the State of Idaho and Jerome School District.
Daily Practice work/Bell Ringer will be checked for completion and accuracy.
Students will have many writing projects throughout the year that will be graded with a rubric provided to the students.
Assessments will be taken at the end of each unit of study.
Efforts on student participation will be assessed.
Students and parents will be able to log into PowerSchool to check on grades and assignments.
Absences:
Students who have an excused absence (illness, school activities) will have the opportunity to make up work for each day absent. In most cases, students will need to borrow notes from a classmate to catch up on any written work assigned or discussed. If a test is missed students will need to make arrangements to take the test.
Students will have two weeks to get missing or late work turned in.
Tardy Policy:
Students who are tardy or late to school or class (and it’s not excused) will have lunch detention in the PASS room. Failure to do so can result in PASS room time and/or meetings with the parents.
Contacting Parents:
It is my goal to keep parents as informed as possible of upcoming events, tests, and projects happening in the classroom. One method I will use to stay in contact is email, please provide your email address below.
Contacting the Teacher:
The best way to contact me is through my school email, listed at the beginning of the syllabus. I can also, typically, be reached by phone before school from 7:45 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. and afterschool from 3:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. If I am unable to answer please leave a message and I will get back to you as soon as possible. If you would like to meet to discuss your student’s progress or other issues that might come up throughout the year, please contact me to make arrangements.
I am looking forward to a great year. We will be busy improving our reading, writing, and language skills. We will have a positive and productive atmosphere in our classroom where all students can be successful.
