On May 10, 2024, the JMS Boys Baseball Team lost a championship game to Garden City, with a final score of 18-0.
Weather conditions were difficult that day, with a combination of wind, rain, and cold temperatures. Garden City played a strong game, hitting a home run on its first possession and striking Jericho out within 10 minutes. Although it was a tough game, Jericho did not give up, and continued attempting to score until the end of the game. It is possible that the stress and pressure of making the most of their time at bat affected Jericho’s performance that day, but the experience also provided motivation for the team to train harder for their next game.
For some members of the team, baseball is more than just a seasonal activity; it is a commitment to train and grow as an athlete. Eighth grader Israel DeJesus, who plays on the JMS Boys Baseball team, has been playing the sport for seven years. He states, “I chose baseball as my sport because I liked it, I was good at it compared to other sports, and it helped me bond with my family and friends.” Although the JMS baseball season may be over, DeJesus knows that baseball will continue to be an important part of his life: “I plan on playing baseball because I grew up around it, never gave up on it, and I played with my friends and family when I grew up…I want to play baseball for maybe another 40 years or more until I can’t.”
