The Student Council of Jericho Middle School has partnered with student-led, non-profit organization Hope for Triumph. Through efforts such as hosting a clothing drive, creating posters and signs the Student Council has raised awareness for a worthy cause.
Hope for Triumph was founded by JMS students Nimisha Devjani, Angel Shah, Ananya Kavi, and Saanvi Mehta. “They came up with the idea of Hope for Triumph in their home kitchen,” explained guidance counselor Ms. Schmitt, who has advised the students. The organization seeks to bring hope to individuals battling difficult diseases by raising awareness for fundraisers that support local hospitals, attending local walks in support of those who have survived or are battling difficult diseases, and creating encouragement kits. Nimisha, Angel, Ananya, and Saanvi promoted their organization throughout JMS, the Jericho Public Library and George A. Jackson Elementary School.
Hope for Triumph hosted The Hope Drive, which gave JMS students the opportunity to donate clothing to those who have survived or are still battling cancer and other diseases. The group’s founders also created the “Hope Kit”, a package designed to bring hope to those who are dealing with difficult diseases. The Hope Kits include an eraser, rubber band, marble, string, Lifesaver candy, chocolate kisses, penny, and candle. “Hope Kits are kits that provide hope, encouragement and support for those battling cancer and other terminal illnesses. These kits are for any age, and are filled with quotes, and little objects that each represent something important,” Ms Schmitt said while showing pictures of the students handing out Hope Kits.
Ms. Schmitt believes that it is better for everyone to think about people other than themselves. “It’s a really nice thing to just do something not as big, but still makes a huge difference in someone’s life. This teaches kids to empathize with other people.” Teaching children to help others is good for society because it makes them realize how they can contribute to something greater. “To me, I think that kindness is the most important thing about being human, and that’s why … I’m a student counselor,” Ms. Schmitt said.
