Cupcake Wars is an annual JMS competition that challenges students to create cupcakes based on a theme. This year’s Cupcake Wars, which took place on March 25, 2024, had the theme “spring into action with what you love.”
To participate in the competition, students are required to make at least 2 dozen cupcakes. The cupcakes must be submitted on the day of the competition with the student’s name and grade, as well as a description of the cupcakes. A group of JMS teacher volunteers then judge the cupcakes based on taste and design. 1st, 2nd and 3rd place prizes are announced in each grade, and an overall grand prize is awarded to one winner in the school. After a day of judging a wide variety of cupcakes, Cupcake Wars ends in a bake sale that raises donations for the Make a Wish Foundation and P.S. I Love You, an organization that provides support for mental illness.
The competition is open to all students of JMS, and allows students the opportunity to share their creativity, create core memories, and have a fun experience with their friends. The social elements of the process are often the most memorable. Kelly Li, an eighth-grader who participated in Cupcake Wars this year, stated that her favorite part was “making the cupcakes with my friends, and…preparing the ingredients.” Between the fun of collaborating with friends, the beautiful and sugary treats, and the opportunity to contribute to a good cause, Cupcake Wars continues to be a sweet tradition here at JMS.
