On March 22 2024, JMS students gathered in the auditorium to hear “Bystander” author James Preller discuss his writing experiences.
The exciting author visit was planned for middle schoolers to learn more about what it is like to be an author and write novels. “Bystander” depicts a case of bullying in middle school. It also informs readers about what bullying is and the negative consequences that result from it. The event was organized by Ms. Conklin, Jericho Middle School’s librarian. “It's an absolute pleasure to be here with students,” she exclaimed. “I really enjoyed James Preller's speech because it helps students understand and learn about helping each other out.”
During the visit, James Preller discussed his experiences dealing with bullying both on a personal level and also through his writing. Ms. Conklin stated, “I think the message of ‘Bystander’ was to take a more active role, and if we can stand up for people, then we can defeat bullying.” In his speech, James Preller quoted the words of Martin Luther King, Jr.: “In the end we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.” It was a reminder for students that words from enemies may hurt, but the lack of support from friends will be remembered forever. Ms. Conklin also added, “Sometimes people that bully have other things going on in their life, which causes them to act that way. That is why we should contribute to helping others.”
Overall, students felt that James Preller's visit and his book "Bystander" was a thought-provoking moment and an amazing opportunity to hear from an active author. One student stated, “I think James Preller [had an] unforgettable speech…[in] his speech, he mentioned about always writing what you feel, not writing what you know. He also brought up bullying and different plot [points] in his other book, "Upstander.” Teachers also believed that the visit encouraged students to use their communication skills and actions to help others. “I would absolutely recommend his new book ‘Upstander’ for students, because it sets a great example that could encourage people to do well,” Ms. Conklin stated. Indeed, the visit was a strong reminder for students and teachers alike on the importance of building community to maintain the well-being of all.
