About Meyzeek

A Rich Academic Tradition

Meyzeek Middle School offers a rigorous education in a developmentally appropriate setting. The school is located in the heart of Smoketown, a historic community of downtown Louisville. The rich academic tradition at 828 South Jackson Street extends historically through multiple generations. Prior to the merger of Jefferson County’s segregated school systems, the campus hosted Booker T. Washington Elementary School and Jackson Junior High School. These institutions were the prestigious schools for African Americans. Many of today’s civic leaders are their alumni.

Over time, the two buildings were combined into a larger Jackson Junior High School. In the early 1970s, Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) adopted the middle school model. In 1977, the school was renamed Albert E. Meyzeek Middle School, in honor of Louisville’s premier principal and civil rights activist who fought for all students’ right to education. Albert E. Meyzeek's life demonstrates the promise of public education and the purpose the school aims to emulate. He is credited with many acts of social justice, including starting the first integrated Carnegie public library dedicated to African American studies.

We continue to pursue his vision today. Enrollment at Meyzeek exceeds 1,000 students across grades six through eight and represents the full diversity the city offers. The Mathematics/Science/Technology (MST) Magnet Program attracts talented students from the immediate neighborhood and the northern third of Jefferson County. Meyzeek’s unique mix of students, rich history, and ongoing success fuel the school spirit that is the Meyzeek Mystique.
