Who is Mrs. Laughlin?

My name is Raini Laughlin, recently Raini Downing (I got married this summer), but you can just call me Mrs. Laughlin. I am proud to be a Mathematics teacher at Alameda International Jr./Sr. in Lakewood, CO. I am excited about this year and plan to work towards our mission where:

"Alameda International delivers a challenging, international education in which students act to create a better and more peaceful world through inquiry, intercultural understanding, and respect."

The last five years have been pretty exciting! I received my Bachelors in Secondary Mathematics through Western State Colorado University in Gunnison, CO and obtained my Master of Arts in Secondary Education through WGU in under one year so I could walk at graduation at Disney World in Orlando, FL. I have taught at a public online school where I had the opportunity to work with students who were training to be Olympians and working towards scholarships to Julliard, as well as students who were too ill to be present in a classroom. I most recently worked at an alternative school in Jeffco for at-risk students who needed extra support to succeed in our school system.

When I am not at work or enrolled in school, I enjoy reading a good book, preferably something cheesy and romantic, watching sports, traveling with my wife and family, watching TV shows, and hanging out with my cat, Veno.

What are IB and MYP?

Middle Years Programme (MYP)

As taken from, Middle Years Programme Jeffco Site:

"The Middle Years Program (MYP) is designed for students aged 11 to 16. It provides a framework of learning that encourages students to become creative, critical and reflective thinkers. The MYP emphasizes intellectual challenge, encouraging students to make connections between their studies in traditional subjects and the real world. It fosters the development of skills for communication, intercultural understanding and global engagement - essential qualities for young people who are becoming global leaders. "

International Baccalaureate (IB)

As taken from, Middle Years Programme Jeffco Site:

"The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable, and caring young people who help create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.

To this end, the organization works with schools, governments, and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment.

These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right."

What is happening in Math class?

But first, let me take a #SELFIE!

It is important to take a #SELFIE in math class! A student will be able to say "I Showed my work, Explained my answer, used Lots of math vocabulary, Found multiple solutions, I preserved through the problem, and Eliminated careless errors." When a student is caught taking a #SELFIE, they earn a selfie with Mrs. Laughlin and they are displayed in the classroom for the remainder of the year. My goal is to take a selfie with each of my math students by the end of the year (if not sooner)!

Need Make-Up Work?

It is recommended that students do not miss class because important conversations about the concepts are always happening. If students have an excused absence coming up, please communicate with me to get work ahead of time. Assignments can also be found on Google Classroom.

Students receive assignments on Google Classroom daily. Students can click on the icon to the left to get to the site, and sign-in using their student Google account. Guardians will receive email updates about the work that is missing and grades they are receiving.
