This poetry / memoir publication is the latest collection of writing published by Mr. Reetz and Colt Shoe Press. Students wrote, then purchased books in order to raise funds to donate to The Grub Club, a program of The Action Center that provides food for homeless and emancipated Jeffco students. Some young people are closer to us than you may think!

My kitchen is a place of happiness.
Where a feeling of love and order looms.
It gives off a sweet feeling of kindness.
Where a sensation of comfort will bloom.
If you look you might find some surprises,
Like various hidden cookie cookbooks.
Assorted smells from the oven rises.
Pots and pans stashed away inside a nook.
Wooden cabinets are found up and down.
My cat strolls around on the countertop.
The kitchen has a color scheme of brown.
Our kitchen lights are on almost nonstop.
Overall my kitchen is rather great,
I sure do hope that dinner isn’t late.

Kitchens contains feasts of eternity
Holds more than the day before yesterday
The heart of my kitchen is just literacy
The meals served are never a throwaway
Meals at home are always served with flames
But even eating will give you visions
The scent will put you into a board game
Eat too much and you’ll be in collisions
Ingredients make you feel ambitious
Even small tastes will give you addictions
You will realize the meal was delicious
Do not worry, it is just a conviction
As you’ll remember meals made with mittens,
You’ll never forget meals in my kitchen.

I am feeding what is to come; Here
The heart of others the stomach of more
Not just with words, paper, with love and flair
For brotherhood and motherhood non soar
The hungry the poor, more, more, more, more, near
All needed one, one person one thought one door
Open the cupboard, look for some cans, no bore
Soups, fruits, beans, vegetables if it is canned, score
Sealed canned squishy soft dried fresh clean anything par
Ask, ask friends, teachers, parents neighbors cousins soar
Find collect scavenge see it keep it near
Bag it, donate it give it to the poor
Do you need it do you need the food, the cans there?
Think look at all those cans, look, do you need it? Here.
