Reading Deepens Our Understanding of the World

The focus of this unit is for students to apply appropriate reading strategies and directly reference text to support thinking. They will recognize story elements of narrative texts and features/elements of informational texts. Students will ask and answer questions about text in genres including fables, folktales, myths, and various forms of informational text. Students will be expected to accurately state the main idea and supporting details or central message, lesson, or moral, and describe how details or story elements aid in understanding relationships between concepts, ideas, and actions. Building upon students’ prior experiences, teachers and students will establish routines for reading, including agreed-upon rules and expectations for direct instruction, discussions and independent work time.
