Core instruction in literacy includes reading, writing, speaking, listening and viewing. Daily literacy instruction includes time for Reading Workshop, Foundational and Writing Workshop. This is a time for direct, explicit instruction through whole group, small group, and individual settings, and time for independent practice of all literacy skills.
Teachers use the structures within reading workshop, foundational skills, and writing workshop to address the literacy needs of all students. The instruction during the literacy time lays the foundation to support reading and writing across the day and through all the contents during the school year.
The following documents have been created to support Jeffco teachers in structuring their daily literacy instruction. Time frames are given as recommendations for primary and intermediate grade levels in order for the standards to be taught and assessed throughout the year.
