Class D License Requirements in North Dakota

Knowledge and Vision Test

  • Completion of Knowledge Test with a minimum score of 20/25 (80%) correct
  • Completion of Vision Test, either
    • @ Driver's License Division Facility
    • @ Vision Specialist w/ NDDOT Form

Road Test

  • Completion of Road Test by limiting the number of driving infractions committed during a brief driving experience.
  • Must provide own car for the road test
  • Must schedule an appointment online

Fees and Documents

  • Fee to take knowledge test at Driver's License Division - $5/attempt
  • Fee for permit card - $15
  • Specific document are required to prove identity and the Read ID card. Look on the NDDOT website for instructions.


  • Fee to take road test at Driver's License Division - $5/attempt
  • Fee for license card - $0
  • Specific document beyond those provided to acquire permit may be required.

Age Requirements

  • Must be 14-years-old to attempt the knowledge test (permit test).
  • Minors must have sponsorship for permit by a parent or legal custodian
  • If 14- or 15-years-old, must hold permit for 12 months before attempting road test.
  • If 15-years-old, must hold permit for a minimum of 6 months
  • If 16- or 17-years-old, must hold permit for 6 months or until the age of 18.

*Sponsorship means financial responsibility for the student driver. This sponsorship may be revoked at any time by the parent or legal custodian until the age of 18.

Driver Education and Licensing

If you are at least 15 years old, you can apply for a Class D restricted driver license. You must have held the Instruction Class D permit for at least 12 months if you are under the age of 16, or at least 6 months if you are under the age of 18. You must have completed driver education and 50 hours of practice driving in variable conditions if you are under the age of 16 prior to being allowed to take the road test.

Certificate of Training:

  • Driving student completed 30 hours of classroom instruction
  • Driving student completed 6 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction

Certificate of Course Completion*:

  • Driving student completed 30 hours of classroom instruction
  • Driving student completed 6 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction
  • Driving student demonstrated proficiency in a selected set of driving skills provided by the NDDOT Drivers License Division

*A Certificate of Course Completion is not dependent on how many hours or the service package that is purchased from a commercial driving school. It is awarded only to those that have demonstrated driving proficiency.
