Makaton is a unique language programme that uses symbols, signs and speech to enable people to communicate.
Makaton signs are used with speech in spoken word order. This helps provide extra clues about what someone is saying. Using signs can help people who have no speech or whose speech is unclear. Using symbols can help people who have limited speech and those who cannot, or prefer not to sign.
Adults and children with learning or communication difficulties and by everyone who shares their lives
Teaching the early stages of communication, language development and literacy skills.
Signing with speech encourages the development of communication and language skills in babies and young children, gives greater understanding of a child's wants and needs, and reduces frustration.
Makaton uses speech with signs (gestures) and symbols (pictures) to help people communicate. We also use facial expression, eye contact and body language to give as much information as possible.
Using Makaton is fun!
Use signs and symbols as much and as often as you can.
Always speak as you sign or use symbols.
Offer lots of encouragement.
Don't give up! It may take a while but it is worth it in the end.
