I've seen Whitney thrive, with industry leaders like Austex and Dyna Energetics boosting local employment. New retail and housing developments meet our community needs, and we are working with developers to ensure our city is ready for future growth.
I've introduced new ways to enhance transparency and engagement in Whitney. We've launched our first-ever social media platforms for real-time updates, started the Mayor's Recap for direct insights into city operations, and continue to provide detailed updates on our initiatives in The Lakelander.
We've enhanced civic participation through committees, budget workshops, and economic development meetings, allowing Whitney residents to affect city planning and policies directly. By discussing the unique challenges small towns in Texas face with other mayors and city managers, I aim to strengthen our collective ability to address regional issues.
In 2024, after revamping our audit processes and integrating advanced financial management software, Whitney successfully ended a five-year hiatus from grant applications. This allowed us to secure a $750,000 CDBG Block Grant for flood prevention and update our Drought Contingency Plan, which hadn't been revised since 1991. These updates make us eligible for further funding from the Texas Water Development Board, potentially supporting a new water treatment plant to enhance our city's infrastructure resilience.
I work to get our young people involved in community service. It’s a great way for them to learn about responsibility and take pride in their town, while also helping out and making our events special.
I wear two hats for City Events: Executive Director of the Chamber of Commerce and Mayor. I look forward to celebrating Whitney's community spirit with events like Pioneer Days, which honor our heritage, and fun gatherings like Grinch Fest and Trunk or Treat, all of which foster unity and joy across our city.
During my 2023 mayoral campaign, revitalizing Whitney's parks was a top priority.
Private Donation: A generous resident of Whitney donated funds earmarked for Parks. I used that money to upgrade the LED lights at the ballpark.
Texas New Mexico Power generously donated a day of labor and their heavy equipment to help clean up our tennis courts. Now, I'm collaborating with the Hill County Lake Whitney chapter of the Lions Club to transform this area into a pickleball court and more.
MyTCoat generously donated picnic tables for our parks and sturdy trash cans for the downtown area. A few decades ago, Martis Ward's High School class built playground equipment in shop class, this is currently being cleaned and powder-coated at MyTCoat.
Beautify Whitney: We updated our city code regarding high grass and trash nuisances. To name a few this resulted in over 120 properties being mowed and 67 properties being cleaned of litter, debris, and junk vehicles. While this change wasn't popular with everyone, it has helped clean up our town.
Future Plans: The Whitney ISD donated some land to the city, and I am working on a plan to create park areas for our community to enjoy.
