In the second phase, students develop a proposal and make an "elevator pitch" to the class. The main purpose of the proposal is to help the students clarify the purpose of their project and to set concrete goals for their research. The elevator pitch allows them to practice public speaking while getting feedback from their peers.
This is a crucial step: students are not allowed to begin their research until their proposals have been approved. This can take several weeks if their initial proposals are vague or underdeveloped.
