1100 INTRODUCTION TO BUSINESS +

This course provides a survey of the business world. Topics include the basic principles and practices of contemporary business. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate an understanding of business concepts as a foundation for studying other business subjects.
1101 ENTREPRENEURSHIP +

Prerequisite: Introduction to Business
This course has been designed to link classroom education with real-world experience through entrepreneurial activities. Students will identify what skills entrepreneurs need and discover employers are seeking some of the same characteristics. Students will compare and select one of the different types of business ownership and develop a business plan. Other topics will include performing marketing research, choosing a location, marketing the business, hiring and managing staff. Additional areas of emphasis will include using technology, financial management, and developing a strategy for growth in today's marketplace. This course will incorporate the basic managerial skills and competencies needed to create, manage, and grow a new enterprise.
1103 JAB HONORS BUSINESS SEMINAR +

Prerequisite: Enrolled in JAB or approval from Business Department Supervisor
The objective of this course is to teach the principles of the free enterprise system, current business procedures, and money management skills. This course will introduce students, through the use of project-based instruction, to the foundations of finance and the role of finance, credit, savings, investments, and consumer responsibilities play in business and personal lives.
1104 SUCCESS SEMINAR +

Success Seminar is a course designed to develop skills necessary for success in high school, post-secondary goals, and essential life skills.In-depth lessons use a variety of both innovative and traditional teaching techniques including long-range projects, learning activities, and reflective journal writing. Students practice the note-taking, time management, study, technical, social, and human relations skills they need every day in their academic and elective subjects and in their “real” lives outside of school. They will learn more about themselves and their futures in the world of post-secondary education and careers. Students will also acquire the tools to help them reduce stress while also excelling in academic endeavors.

Technology has revolutionized the financial services industry, creating demanding positions in need of talented applicants who have mastered both the technical and soft skills, including the ability to communicate effectively, solve problems, and work as team members. This course will introduce students, through the use of project-based instruction, to the foundations of finance and the role finance, credit, savings, investments, insurance, and consumer responsibilities play in business and personal lives. Various technological tools such as concepts and applications of business-related software, use of the internet for research and writing, and college and career information through SCOIR are additional skills that will be acquired to be utilized throughout school, work, and life. The objective of this course is to learn the importance of keeping accurate business records. The following areas are included: principles of and credit related to assets, liabilities, owners equity, revenue, expenses, and withdrawals, analysis and application of the general journal, general ledger, worksheets to complete financial statements, payroll, and other accounting records. The single proprietorship form of business is emphasized in this course.

This course offers further development and reinforcement of the principles and practices learned in first-year accounting. In addition, advanced material is introduced including sales, purchases, cash control, preparing adjusting entries to complete a ten-column worksheet, merchandise inventory, partnership, and corporation accounting procedures. Practice sets are provided for practical application of theory.

This course is designed to accommodate those students interested in mastering advanced accounting principles. It provides a comprehensive background for students interested in careers in the accounting profession. Advanced practice sets are also completed.

This course is designed to develop a greater awareness and appreciation of contract and tort law. Efforts are made to demystify the operation of the law, court procedures, and the legal system as they apply to businesses and individuals. Applications are also made to the present needs and interests of students. Problems, discussions, debates, and case studies will be utilized in this course.
1128 MOCK TRIAL: LAW & THE ADVERSARY SYSTEM +

Students will learn how to prepare and participate in an actual Mock Trial. This process will enable students to further develop their writing, listening, speaking, and leadership skills. Students will also be introduced to criminal and civil law, juvenile law, social issues, and how the law is an ever-changing process. The New Jersey State Bar Foundation in cooperation with the Ocean County Bar Association sponsors competitions.

This course will introduce the students to the role of marketing and advertising methods. Students will gain an understanding of basic marketing terms, the role of marketing in an ever increasing global market, and the steps involved in the creation of marketing programs and advertising campaigns. Advantages, disadvantages, and opportunities of a variety of strategies will be analyzed, along with ethical concerns and legal considerations. Students will participate in a variety of project-based assignments to develop their creative skills, decision-making, and problem solving.
1131 HONORS BUSINESS MANAGEMENT +

Prerequisite: Enrolled in JAB Academy or Teacher Recommendation; Course may be offered to advanced business students.
This course will go beyond the basics of business and shift focus to business management. Business operations from the entrepreneurial and management perspective will be explored. This course will introduce students, through the use of project-based instruction, to the foundation and history of management, management approaches and philosophies, quantitative decision-making and human resources. All the functions of business management are explored in a realistic, investigative and enriching manner with an added focus on the use of technology and communication as tools of business. Students will also explore the global dimension of business and possible career opportunities in management.

This is a specialized course designed to offer students an opportunity to gain knowledge and develop skills related to the growing sports and entertainment industry. Students will develop skills in the areas of facility design, merchandising, advertising, public relations/publicity, event marketing, sponsoring, ticket distribution, and career opportunities as they relate to the sports and entertainment industry. Simulation software will be used for hands-on experience.

The Economics curriculum is developed to provide students with academic exposure to macroeconomics and microeconomics. Students will understand how the market economy functions utilizing the fundamental principles of supply and demand and its elasticity. Students will obtain and apply knowledge on the business cycle, employment, inflation, and GDP to make efficient and effective decisions in their careers and personal finances.

The purpose for the AP Macroeconomics course is to give students a thorough understanding of the principles of economics that apply to an economic system as a whole. The course places particular emphasis on the study of national income and price determination, and also develops students’ familiarity with economic performance measures, the financial sector, stabilization policies, economic growth, and international economics. Having successfully met all requirements, students will be prepared and required to take the Advanced Placement Macroeconomics Exam.
