The US Air Force Jr. ROTC (AFJROTC) course, open to male and female students, is designed for young people looking for something different and challenging. The two-part course features academics and leadership. Students will receive a fundamental understanding of aviation and space. The course includes application to other facets of daily living and to other subjects ranging from social studies, history and science. The course offers an introduction to the whole field of aviation/space, from its history of rocketry, space travel, and to career opportunities in the Aerospace industry.

0653 ROTC/AEROSPACE SCIENCE I +
Grades: 9-12
The purpose of this course is to provide students with an introduction to the basic concepts of aerospace science. Major topics include the historical, political, and social implications of flight, the evolution of flight and space exploration, and the use of air power as an instrument of national policy. Students will learn the Air Junior ROTC history, mission, and organization. They will learn how attitude, discipline, and respect play a role in their lives. Other topics include Drill and Ceremonies, physical fitness, nutrition, and flag ceremonies.
0654 ROTC/AEROSPACE SCIENCE II +
Grades: 10-12
The purpose of this course is to provide students with the scientific principles and design theory relative to aerospace science. Major topics include flight theory, aircraft and rocket design and the natural environment in which aircraft and rockets perform. The terminology and the specialized vocabulary of aerospace theory is addressed as well as basic laws of physics underlying flight theory. Students will understand the concepts of effective communication and its impact on their future. Major topics include individual/group behavior dynamics, problem solving, and leadership training.

The third year course examines our Earth, the Moon and the planets, the latest advances in technology, and continuing challenges of space and manned space flight. Issues critical to travel in the upper atmosphere such as orbits and trajectories, unmanned satellites, space probes,guidance and control systems are explained. The manned space-flight section covers major milestones in the endeavor to land on the Moon, and to safely orbit humans and crafts in space for temporary and prolonged periods. It also covers the development of space stations, the Space Shuttle, and international laws for the use of and travel in space. Emphasis is also placed on managing others, stress and finances, citizenship, and ethics. Topics include which path to take after high school with information on how to apply for admission to college, how to begin the job search including filling out the job application, writing the resume, and how to prepare for the job interview. Third year cadets put their leadership skills into practice by holding key leadership positions in the cadet corps.
0656 ROTC/AEROSPACE SCIENCE IV +
Grades: 11-12
Aerospace Science IV is a continuation of the program strongly emphasizing a leadership component. Students completing this level are strong candidates for scholarship consideration.
Students will learn the management skills necessary to oversee all unit operations. Major topics include management history, concepts, skills, problem solving, decision-making, and negotiating.
0657 HONORS AFJROTC LEADERSHIP EDUCATION: PRINCIPLES OF MANAGEMENT +
Grade: 12
Prerequisite: AFROTC III, hold a senior leadership position in the corps, Teacher Recommendation
This is an honors-level course in applied leadership using the AFROTC organization as a leadership laboratory. Subjects cover the basic elements of leadership, principles of management, and preparation for life after high school. Cadets manage all aspects of cadet corps activities. These hands-on experiences afford senior cadets the opportunity to put theories into practice in communications, decision-making, personal interaction, managing, and organizing. Advanced reading assignments, writing assignments, practical actions, and analysis are requirements for this course.
Activities designed to reinforce classroom leadership instruction are a must. Cadets will organize and participate in Color Guard, Drill Team, Marching Unit, community ceremonies (parades) and athletic events in the school and community. Promotion ceremonies for awards and decorations will be held to reward students for academic achievement. Curriculum in Action trips to aerospace museums are made yearly. "Hands on" learning experiences are provided for all students when working as teams to construct model airplanes, and design, build and launch model rockets. Proficient students are awarded model rocketry badges. A one-week leadership camp is held annually during the summer.
Three and four year full tuition college scholarships as well as nominations to Military Academies, are available to academically qualified students who complete three years of Air Force JROTC and apply for them. Those students not desiring to attend college may voluntarily choose to enlist in the Armed Forces at pay grades higher (E-3) than regular enlistees. There is no military obligation for participating in Air Force Jr., ROTC. Our unit awards local scholarships each year to qualified senior cadets.
