Physical Education
At Brimsdown, we follow the Enfield Scheme of work for P.E. which supports pupils to meet the National Curriculum End of Key Stage attainment targets. The curriculum aims to develop children’s competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities, to ensure children are physically active for sustained periods, to provide children with opportunities to engage in competitive sports and activities through inter-school competitions, to enhance their aspirations in future sport and physical activity and to ensure they can lead healthy and active lives.
The carefully prescribed scheme provides an inclusive and progressive curriculum that incorporates the three domains of learning in P.E. (thinking, physical and personal/social health) also referred to as: head, hands and heart. Each lesson begins with a cardio-vascular warm-up and stretching of relevant muscles closely linked with main activity followed by a cool down. We explicitly teach children the related vocabulary so they can articulate their ideas and opinions confidently. At Brimsdown, we are committed to using P.E. as a vehicle to foster children’s core values of resilience, determination, responsibility, respect and fair-play (sportsmanship).
We strive to give our pupils the opportunities they may not have outside school so we have implemented Forest School lessons into our PE curriculum. It is an ethos that promotes self-esteem, creativity, confidence and independence. It is a series of long-term sessions that build on the needs and development of the child, not just one-off days in the woods. It enables supported risk-taking, child-centred learning, exploration and play and follows the strands of Outdoor and Adventure Learning in the National Curriculum.
Another additional strand to our PE lessons in the Autumn term is Yoga and Mindfulness. This helps our children develop their self awareness and manage their emotions. Giving them space for reflection in an increasingly busy world.
All children have 2 hours and 15 minutes of P.E. a week. This is split into three 45 minute sessions; indoor PE, outdoor PE and a third session on Forest School or Yoga and Mindfulness (depending on the term.) Children in Early Years also engage in at least 180 mins of physical activity a day, and children in Key Stage 1 and 2 participate in at least 60 minutes of physical activity each day (break-time and lunch-time activities and after-school). Children are exposed to key vocabulary throughout each lesson.
