HOUR OF CODE

STONE CREEK COMMUNITY'S NEED TO KNOW

move that bot!

A guide for all parents and community regarding the activities surrounding Hour of Code Week at Stone Creek - Dec 4-Dec 8.

WHAT IS HOUR OF CODE?

The Hour of Code started as a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify "code", to show that anybody can learn the basics, and to broaden participation in the field of computer science. It has since become a worldwide effort to celebrate computer science, starting with 1-hour coding activities but expanding to all sorts of community efforts. Check out the tutorials and activities. This grassroots campaign is supported by over 400 partners and 200,000 educators worldwide.

IUSD has highly encouraged all schools to participate! With your support, we can introduce and encourage our students to delve into the coding world.

WHAT WILL BE HAPPENING AT STONE CREEK DURING THE WEEK OF DEC 4-8?

UNPLUGGED IN THE LIBRARY

Coding activities are not always in front of a screen or with a device! This year, we will be UNPLUGGED in the library. Students will be broken up into small groups. They will be challenged with block commands in an age appropriate "write a code" activity to MOVE THAT BOT!

This will occur during normal library hours. Checkouts will not happen this week. Students will be given an opportunity to check out an extra book the week before to accommodate our avid readers!

PLUGGED IN THE INNOVATION LAB

Each class will have a time this week to come to the Innovation Lab. We will have our small fleet of Dash robots and age appropriate coding apps on the iPads ready to MOVE THAT BOT!

HOUR OF CODE IN THE CLASSROOM

As an extra challenge, we are encouraging all classes to CHOOSE CODE for 30 or more minutes sometime in the week to introduce your students to Coding games! These games are sure to be favorites at home or even in the class when appropriate!

HOW CAN I PARTICIPATE?

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

We need all the help we can get from our community to make this week a huge success! Please sign up here to volunteer in your child's class during the PLUGGED or UNPLUGGED activities in the Media Center.

LOOKING FOR LEGOS!!!

Our Innovation Lab is up and going with daily STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) activities daily during lunch. We would LOVE any lego blocks and figurines you might be ready to donate! We can take any block types or pieces. Please just bring them to the office and tell them it's for the Media Lab.

WE WANT MORE!
