Our English Language Arts department is committed to developing literate students who demonstrate reading, writing, and critical thinking skills necessary to make them successful in today's global society.
Health instruction within IUSD addresses:
The California Healthy Youth Act (CHYA) requires that students receive instruction on Sexual Health, HIV Prevention, and Gender Identity once in middle school and once in high school. IUSD has no plans to provide CHYA-related instruction in our elementary school grades, K-6.
Our History and Social Science department values lifelong learning developed through inquiry and exploration of key historical concepts, as well as examination of social, economic, and political problems facing the state, nation and world. Through engaging in meaningful discussion and collaborative experiences, we work to prepare all students to be informed, broad-minded, responsible and ethical citizens in their communities.
Knowledge of and proficiency in foreign languages are important tools in today’s world. They lead us to a better understanding of, as well as communication with, other people and nations. Irvine Unified School District offers programs in 6 languages: Chinese, French, Korean, Latin, Spanish and American Sign Language. In all programs, reading, writing, speaking and listening skills are stressed as well as cultural studies. We believe that all of these components together are necessary to achieve language proficiency and understanding.
