A 3 ACT Task is a whole-group activity that brings problem solving in math to live and helps students understand the famous question of "when will I ever use this?" The three parts that make up the 3 ACT Task include ACT 1: an engaging video to get students thinking, ACT 2: additional information that students determined they needed to solve the problem, and ACT 3: the revealing of the answer.
Why would I use a 3 ACT task in my classroom? What are the benefits?

ALL students can be involved, regardless of ability level
Allows students to make reasonable estimates, and justify their answers
Increase opportunity for Math talk
Encourage the use of different approaches to find the solution
Help students build a better understanding of relationships among different mathematical concepts
