Gmail Etiquette: Do's and Don'ts of emailing. How to get your message across in a professional manner, and with a professional appearance.

Make sure to have a clear and concise subject line. This should grab the receivers attention and should be no more than 70 characters long.
Use a professional greeting or salutation, for instance: Good Morning, Good Afternoon, Hello, and Dear.
Proofread the entirety of your email before sending, you can even ask a friend or family member to read it once through as well. Two sets of eyes are better than one!
Understand that different cultures speak and write differently, tailor your message with that in mind.
Always remember to close your email with a professional signature. As a student this should include only your name and the best way to contact you (email, and phone number). If you would like you can even include your social network account links or handles.

Don't over use exclamation points, abbreviations such as 'LOL', emojis or emoticons, capitalization, and humor, do not always translate well in educational and professional environments. Although you may be intending to make the reader laugh, or show your excitement, your message can be misinterpreted.
Make sure that you are writing your message in the body of the email and not in the subject line.
Do not use fonts that are over elaborate, classic fonts are best. Your email should be easy to read so make sure the font size is between 10-12 pt font and in the color black or a dark color.
Don't assume that the reader knows exactly what you are talking about. This means avoiding one-liners and referring back to other information in the email chain since there is nothing more frustrating than having to scroll through a long email chain history to catch up on a correspondence.

The format for your Gmail account will follow:

Username:student: FIRSTNAMELASTNAMEBIRTHDAYDAY@iu12gmail.org

Password:LASTNAMEFIRSTLETTERCAPITALLASTNAMESECONDLETTERBIRTHDATE

For example, John Smith born on January 5th, 2010

Username: studentjohnsmith5@iu12gmail.org

Password: Sm1/5/2010

An email will be sent to this address when your course is ready.
