The Burmese American Community Institute is a non-profit organization founded in 2011 that provides educational and vocational support to the Burmese community in greater Indianapolis. The BACI supports community members regionally, nationally, and globally through strategic partnerships and advocacy. Since its inception, the BACI has assisted over 20,000+ individuals.

Role overview: The Burmese American Community Institute (BACI) is a dynamic, forward-looking, and growing non-profit organization. We seek well-qualified, highly motivated, creative, and solutions-oriented candidates to fill in the part-time intern position with the Employment and Microenterprise Development Program (EMEDP). Employment and Microenterprise Development Program mainly focuses on the job stability of the community members, and assists the community members to be self-sufficient by providing the job requirements training. The intern will be responsible for the accessing the community members needs regarding the employment, and provide the necessary training and support. The intern must report to the program manager, and closely work with the team.

Essential role functions:
Client Engagement and Support:
Engage clients to establish trusting relationships focused on competitive and sustained employment.
Assist clients in creating achievable plans for sustainable business growth.
Provide individualized follow-along support to help clients maintain employment.
Assist clients in understanding how earned income affects benefits and provide referrals for benefits planning.
Help clients identify long-term employment goals, considering factors like work history, strengths, personal culture, and justice involvement.
Conduct regular case management sessions with each participant to address their needs relative to their business goals.
Document program activities and maintain case files, ensuring timely follow-up with clients.
Small Business Training and Development:
Organize trainings and classes for a Small Business plan covering areas such as profit & loss, feasibility studies, cash flow, and marketing.
Assist participating clients in developing and following achievable plans for business growth.
Recruit volunteers and professional organizations to support participants in reaching their business development goals.
Establish relationships within the local business community, general community, and churches to support client integration.
Explore opportunities for collaborative partnerships with local and national service providers.
Qualifications:
Is patient, enthusiastic, self-controlled, and dependable.
Has the ability to work well with others and follow directions.
Previous work experience and interest in employment, economic self-sufficiency, business development, or other direct social services preferred. Cultural sensitivity is essential.
Understand the program development, implementation, and evaluations.
Demonstrate a high level of professionalism, respect, and personal integrity.
Enthusiasm for BACI’s mission and strong commitment to helping disadvantaged students achieve academic success and college readiness.
Flexibility and availability/willingness to work some weekends.
Willing to learn in a fast paced environment and be adaptable.

Preferences:
Majoring in Business, Mental Health, or Social Service preferred.
Prior experience is not needed, but if a candidate has experience with volunteering in Non Profit Organizations, it would be great.
