Hello! My name is Safia Ahmed, and I am in my senior undergraduate year studying biology with a focus in pre-medicine. My long-term goals include applying for medical school following graduation and eventually specializing to become a pediatric physician. Research is an area that I have become incredibly interested in throughout the past year, and this semester allowed me to gain experience in a laboratory-based setting, which prior to this project I had little experience in. I found it to be an insightful juxtaposition to the more clinical research I am familiar with doing, equipping me with a more technical skillset, along with providing me with a better understanding of one of the most pressing medical concerns facing us today, naturally occurring antibiotic resistance and its range of consequences to the state of public health. This portfolio documents some of the key moments in my growth as a researcher within the stream that I selected to focus on, the Prevalence of Antibiotic Resistance on the Environment (PARE) project. The work described in this portfolio would not have been made possible without the guidance of the professors responsible for the planning and supervision of this research experience, and my fellow PARE members whose contributions were essential to ensuring the collaborative learning process continued forward!
