I am hard-working because of my genuine desire to learn and explore. I am ambitious, which is why I am involved in many experiences like PLTL and internships in college. I am organized, which is how I am able to manage my busy schedule and plan for my future. I am compassionate because I care about the well-being of other people and the environment. These are all qualities that I have and want to maintain as an honors student and individual in the world.
For my undergraduate career, I want to confirm my interest in chemistry and determine a concentration in chemistry to pursue a graduate degree. I also want to gain experience in research labs and teaching to narrow down what I would like to do after I finish school. For my personal goals, I would like to travel, so I want to pursue my graduate degree in a new country. I would also like my career to be meaningful and have a positive impact on the earth.
When creating the I am statement, I had to reflect on who I already was, but there were instances in my reflection that I identified qualities I would like to have or be better at. I said that I was hard-working and ambitious, but I also want to become kinder to myself and others. I haven't made the best choices when it came to the number of commitments I made and so I want to be kinder to myself by allowing myself to take breaks, look after my mental and physical health, and slow down every now and then instead of always taking on more. Because I've been so focused on academics, I have been less attentive to my personal relationships. I want to value personal connections as much as I do academics. In my I am statement, I mentioned that I was organized, but I want to also be good at finding the balance between school, work, and leisure. I want to build more resilience to stress and difficult circumstances, but not overdo it, which is a very difficult balance point to find and maintain.
Since becoming an honors student at IUPUI, I have taken note of my development and how far I've come to acquire the qualities I want to have. The biggest difference between this semester and last semester is how much more organized and disciplined I am. Since I am taking 17 credit hours, a PLTL leader, and a sustainability intern this semester, I have to be organized and disciplined to study and complete assignments. The honors credit requirement has also helped me recognize the importance and value of building personal connections. Since I have to work closely with a faculty member for my honors contract, I have developed a personal relationship with them and realized how important and rewarding it feels to get to know other people on a personal level.
Summary:
During the first week of class, we considered the values and qualities we embodied as honors students at IUPUI. Then, during week 7, we reflected on our present selves and what we wanted to become in the future. We thought about what mattered to us, our goals, and how being an honors student has helped us identify them.
Reflection:
This assignment encouraged me to think about the qualities I believe are important that I already had and the ones that I wanted to acquire. The "I want to become" statement motivated me to find the connection between who I was and what I wanted to become, which lead me to contemplate how I can obtain these qualities and why I wanted to have these qualities. The values that I've identified as important to me will serve as a guideline for me to choose activities and actions that represent who I want to become.
Summary:
Through weeks 4-6 of the course, groups were formed to present a bias that honors students face. Our group addressed the imposter syndrome by describing what it was, how it affected honors students, and how to stop it.
Reflection:
The presentations that were given by each group revealed that there were challenges that all students face but may be more pervasive in honors students, such as outcome bias, anchoring bias, planning fallacy, and imposter syndrome. Our group explored what it meant for an honors student to experience imposter syndrome. While researching the topic, the definition and description of what it felt like to have imposter syndrome helped me recognize the universality of this feeling. Moreover, having a conversation about the imposter syndrome as a class validated my personal experiences because it showed me that it was a real occurrence and other people were also just affected by it, if not more. The challenges that were presented by other groups also encouraged me to reflect on how they were or could potentially affect my academic and personal life. They helped me determine whether my habits as a student were helping or hurting my academic career and what changes I could make to remedy that. For example, I learned that my current study habit of breaking down big assignments into chunks was a good way to overcome the planning fallacy and procrastination.
Summary:
As part of week 7 in-class activities, we created a journey map that outlined our experiences throughout our life. I chose to include significant events and checkpoints beginning in high school and up until the first half of the spring 2023 semester. I focused more on this period because they were the first years in my life where I had more autonomy and was able to make decisions that impacted my life.
Reflection:
The journey map assignment encouraged me to reflect on my life and pick out important choices and events that have impacted my growth. Oftentimes, while we're going through the motions of life, we don't realize how decisions and crossroads that we face shape the outcomes in our lives. Seemingly insignificant decisions like what sport to play, what hobby to pick up, and what clubs to join have caused a ripple in my life that has shaped my interests, passions, and perception of myself. Creating this map has also made me realize how events outside of my control have influenced the course of my life. Overall, reflecting on the choices I've made and the experiences I've had has made me more conscious of my actions in the present and how they will affect my future. I found it beneficial to once in a while, consider how I've gotten to where I am because it helps me figure out where I want to go in the future and how I can get there.
