Summary:
For Fall 2022, my first semester at IUPUI, I competed in the 103rd Speech Competition to fulfill my honors credit requirement in the COMM-R 110 course. There were three rounds in the competition, with seven finalists competing in the Madam Walker Theather. The competition was based on the policy speech assignment of the COMM-R 110 course which required competitors to speak for 6-7 minutes about implementing a change that the audience could take part in. My interest in sustainability and environmental conservation inspired my speech, "We Demand Universal Curbside Recycling!," about the lack of free curbside recycling in Indianapolis.Â
Reflection:
This competition encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone and work on my communication and public speaking skills, which are important for my professional career. The focus and enjoyment from the audience during my speech has encouraged me to make decisions that push me outside of my comfort zone and gain new experiences. I am extremely honored to have placed 2nd in the competition and walk away with a renewed sense of confidence in myself and my achievements.
