Successes and Challenges

About the Internship

Many things are done in the pathology lab, but the impact is to manage chronic disease through testing in the lab and helping with patient care but not exactly like a regular physician. The reason pathologist do their work is to help possibly plan treatment with another specialist of the patient who is dealing with a certain disease.

Workplace

My current strengths as a team member include communication, problem-solving, collaboration, and time management. Where I would like to grow as a professional this year is by not being scared to take a challenge, deciding on my long-term goals/plans, and constantly using what I am learning. I want to grow as a teammate this year by continuing to take initiative, know my strengths and see where I can improve, and always continue to know my role on a team.

Goals

Gaining more background knowledge

Going over the resources/ slides that the pathology lab has given interns, Find to see if there are any certifications needed for my future career goal, and Gain more knowledge in the background of pathology and histology.

Making sure I have down the skills with certain programs/software

Ask other experienced employees more in-depth questions about programs.
- Other employees have answered my questions and I have learned so much from them.
Do my own research on the programs.
- I have done research on the programs and learned so much information.

Look back on training modules provided by the lab.

- I have aced all my modules provided by the lab.

My current career and or/ academic goals include finishing my BS in Public Health, applying for a Master's in Public Health program, and finding a job as an Intervention Disease specialist. I am 100% positive of this choice. What I will do to reach this goal is talk to others in the profession that I am interested in to gain more knowledge from them.

My goals have changed a little but not by a lot. I still want to apply for my MPH and find a job as an intervention disease specialist. I also would like to do something with Pathology and to gain more experience I plan on staying with Dr.Sandusky even after LHSI is over.

Learning

Skills I am using from the survey so far include better communication and better leadership. I am using these skills because I have been taking the lead in some really cool projects and giving feedback to others in the lab.

A skill from the survey I would like to work on is teamwork because there are times I like to stay to myself and do my own work. What I will do to grow with this skill is reach out more. I am currently using past experiences as an intern currently from remember certain things from my anatomy class.

Skills I am still using are teamwork and communication and I am still using these skills by being a part of large projects voicing how to do tasks and helping others out.

Skills from the survey I would like to work on are confronting failures because I feel like at times I will not confront if someone is doing something that is possibly not correct and to grow these skills I will practice using my voice more.

I have built on my strengths by not being as quiet and speaking my mind at times.

Successes and Challenges

In just a short amount of time at my internship site, there have been a lot of successes, but some are very important to me and mean a lot. A couple of weeks ago, I took over my first project and my name went on the report. I believe this will prepare me for my future career when I need to write many reports. The challenges I had at first were managing and remembering on how to use and do everything in the lab, but now it has gotten to the point that it is instinct. Also, my team has been supportive and helpful when it comes down to needing help in the lab with anything. Even though there has been some bumps at times, I am proud of myself for my successes and learning from all my mistakes.
