When I began the Health Sciences program, my understanding of the field was primarily rooted in basic health knowledge and a general interest in healthcare. Over time, my perspective has deepened significantly. I have come to appreciate the interdisciplinary nature of health sciences, and how biological, social, behavioral, and policy related factors all interesect to influence individual and community health. Courses on healthcare ethics, public health, and health policy especially stood out, helping me understand the broader systems that shape care delivery. A transformative moment for me was learning about health disparities and the social determinants of health (diversity issues of health and rehab), which sparked a passion for improving access to equitable care.
Throughout this program, I have grown immensely as a communicator, problem solver, and innovator. I’ve learned how to effectively present ideas, both in written form and verbally, through research papers, group projects, and class discussions. One example of my growth was during our final capstone project where I worked with my group members to assess barriers to care for Spanish-speaking LEP patients in oral healthcare. This required critical thinking, creativity, and cultural competence. This capstone course, in particular, challenged me to synthesize knowledge from across the curriculum, integrate evidence-based research, and think more strategically about healthcare interventions.
Balancing academic responsibilities with personal commitments, including athletics and part-time work, was one of my greatest challenges. There were times when managing deadlines and maintaining focus felt overwhelming. However, by practicing time management, seeking support from professors, and staying organized, I was able to overcome these obstacles. These experiences taught me the importance of resilience, prioritization, and self-discipline—skills that are essential not only in academics but also in professional practice.
This capstone experience has reaffirmed my desire to become a physician assistant with a specialization in plastic surgery, while also broadening my interest in culturally responsive care. The research and reflection required throughout this course has highlighted the need for compassionate, patient-centered providers who understand the systemic barriers patients face. I am now more committed than ever to pursuing a career where I can blend clinical expertise with advocacy and education to improve patient outcomes.
The knowledge and skills I have gained throughout this program will serve as a strong foundation for my future in healthcare. I plan to apply my communication, critical thinking, and cultural competence skills in clinical practice and continue advocating for inclusive, accessible healthcare environments. Looking forward, I intend to further my education through PA school and seek opportunities for ongoing professional development, including certifications, volunteer work, and continuing education in health disparities and ethics. This program has not only shaped who I am today, but who I aspire to be in the healthcare field.
