My name is Morgen Frausto, and I am proud to come from a diverse background. I am primarily Mexican, German, and Italian. Because of this I have a rich blend of vibrant traditions, deep-rooted values, and diverse influences. Together my cultures shape who I am - someone who values heritage, embraces diversity, and finds strength in the fusion of traditions that make up my unique identity.
Being from a Mexican background, I am able to experience a culture that is full of warmth, family unity, and a love for bold flavors and celebrations. Majority of my Mexican family lives in San Antonio, Texas. However, that does not mean I am unable to experience some of their cultural traditions. Growing up, my Abuelo, who is 100% Mexican, taught me many traditions. My favorite memory is when he taught me how to make traditional tamales, which turned into a cherished tradition that connected me and my brother to our Mexican
Another tradition I grew up with was embracing my Nana’s Italian heritage and love for homemade pasta. Once a month my family would come over to my Nana’s house and we would make homemade pasta and spaghetti sauce. This gave me a newfound love for cooking and Italian food.
Growing up I did many projects in school on my cultural background. Overtime I began to stop highlighting on my Mexican heritage because of the variety of stereotypes I encountered. I would be called names, made fun of for my lack of color, and my inability to speak fluent Spanish. Navigating these stereotypes growing up was both challenging and eye-opening. Overtime my father reminded me to embrace my heritage as something that makes me unique, using it to educate others and challenge narrow-minded perceptions.
Qualities within my Cultural Identity
Growing up with a German, Italian, and Mexican background, this has given me a unique blend of qualities that shape who I am. Growing up, my Nana, who is Italian, has given me a strong sense of passion, creativity, and love for self-expression. She taught me to embrace my emotions, and to also appreciate the beauty of art, food, and story telling.
My Grandpa, who is German, instilled in me a strong sense of discipline and attention to detail. Growing up, he would make me help out with chores around the house while telling me stories about him growing up on the farm with his 7 siblings. I admired his precision and hard working mindset. I have carried this with me into adulthood and will never forget the importance of these characteristics.
Conclusion
Overall, embracing my cultural background has shaped me into a well-rounded, resilient, and passionate woman. While I have faced stereotypes and misconceptions, I have learned to be thankful for my rich cultural identity. The lessons passed down from my grandparents, and the traditions I grew up with gave me a deep appreciation for family, hard work, and self expression. I will carry these traditions and characteristics with me wherever I go.
