The Department of Mathematical Sciences allows students to prove proficiency or receive credit in certain mathematics courses after passing an examination administered in-person by the department. Credit awarding may be subject to student passing next higher course. If a student feels that they have not been placed appropriately, they may take a Math Proficiency Exam. Each test may only be taken one time. The Department of Mathematical Sciences will determine eligibility.
Students are eligible to take a proficiency exam if:
The student successfully took the course at IU Indianapolis but it has been more than three semesters (or one year) since completing.
The student successfully completed the course at another institution, but it has been over three semesters (or one year), or the course did not transfer successfully to IU Indianapolis.
If the student earned lower than a C (at IU Indianapolis or elsewhere), they will need to retake the course. The prerequisite must also have been completed within the past three semesters (or one year). The proficiency exam is not an option for students who do not meet a prerequisite grade or for students who attempt to “test out” or bypass a course without having successfully completed the course previously.
If the student is currently registered for the math course for which they are taking a proficiency exam, they should be advised to remain in the current course until they successfully pass the proficiency exam. After the first three weeks of each semester (one week in summer), tests will no longer be offered for the purpose of changing courses during the current semester.
Students wishing to take any examination must register to do so by submitting a request via email to mathinfo@iu.edu.
Courses for which students may receive credit by examination are listed below:
Student is not eligible for a Credit by Exam if the course has been attempted at IU Indianapolis in the past.
