Math department policy of prerequisite checks

Since Fall 1998, the Department of Mathematical Sciences, together with the Office of the Registrar, has implemented a system for prerequisite checks on all students registering for first and second year math (and stat) courses:

MATH 11000
MATH 11100
MATH 13000
MATH 13100
MATH 13200
MATH 13600
MATH 15300
MATH 15400
MATH 15900

MATH 16500
MATH 16600
MATH 17100
MATH 22100
MATH 22200
MATH 23100
MATH 23200
MATH M118
MATH M119

The purpose of this system is to help ensure correct student placement. According to this system, a student registering for any of the mathematics courses listed above, must satisfy either of the following conditions:

  1. Successfully completed the prerequisite course within the past two years with a minimal grade as indicated on the Math Notice chart, or

  2. Directly placed in the course based on the results of the ALEKS Mathematics Placement Test taken within the past year (see Math Placement Chart)

Students who plan to register for any of the courses listed above but do not meet either of these conditions will be barred by the system from automatically registering unless there is intervention by the student's unit/school counselor, advisor, or by the Math Department.

Students currently enrolled in a prerequisite course will be able to register for the subsequent course, but their final grade on the prerequisite course will be expected to satisfy the minimal grade required. If the student does not meet the minimal grade required, s/he will be asked to retake the prerequisite course.
