Every semester there are students who find they have enrolled in the incorrect math class and need to "drop-back" to a lower level class.
Students who need to adjust their schedules are encouraged to do so as early as possible in the semester as they must be processed no later than 3.5 weeks from the first day of the semester. The Department of Mathematical Sciences can also move a student to a higher course under this policy, if warranted.
After the first week of classes, students are typically charged a late transaction fee for adjusting their schedule. The Department of Mathematical Sciences has an agreement with the Registrar’s and Bursar's Offices to waive the late transaction fee and avoid the “W” on the transcript when the student drops one math course and adds another one using the official Drop-back procedure.
Students and/or Advisors should email mathinfo@iu.edu with:
Student's name
Student's ID
Student's IU email address
Math course (including section number) to DROP and
Math course (including section number) to ADD.
Once an email is received by the Department of Mathematical Sciences, it will be vetted. If approved, an official drop/add form will be generated.
First, the form is sent to the student for their signature, and is returned to the Department.
Next, the form is sent to the student's listed advisor for their signature, and is returned to the Department.
Finally, the form is sent to the instructor (of the requested course) for their signature, and is returned to the Department.
The Department will submit the completed form (along with other required paperwork) to the Registrar. The Registrar will notify the student via email once the change is completed. The Department cannot go back and remove cost or W from a student who has submitted their forms independently.
The Department is unable to make section changes within a course. Simply changing sections does not qualify as moving from one math course to a different math course. Students wishing to only switch sections are recommended to complete an electronic drop/add form and submit it to the Registrar's Office with appropriate approvals. Please reach out to the Bursar for any questions regarding if there is fee for “swapping” sections. Please note that after first week an Instructor may deny a swap or adding a student to their section with exception of Departmental initiated official drop-backs. Any student who changes a course or section is responsible to reach out to Instructor and complete any missed coursework immediately.
