The courses below are common courses we receive the most questions about from students and advisors:
SCI-M 100 is a study skills course in which skills are practiced on developmental mathematical content, and is primarily for students with ALEKS scores below 20 and SAT scores below 500. This course will prepare students for MATH-I 110. See Advising Guidelines for Developmental Math for more information.
Both MATH-I 110 (4 credits) and MATH-I 111 (4 credits) are intermediate algebra courses (second year high school algebra), but they are designed for different audiences.
The focus of MATH-I 110 will be to prepare liberal arts and business majors in intermediate algebra (second year high school algebra) for success in MATH-M 118, MATH-M 119, and STAT-I 301.
The focus of MATH-I 111 will be to prepare science, engineering, and technology majors in intermediate algebra (second year high school algebra) for success in MATH-I 153 and MATH-I 154 or MATH-I 159.
Although the content of the two courses is similar, the most significant difference will be in the rigor and the level of mastery required for passing the course.
A student who successfully completes MATH-I 111 will be prepared for MATH-M 118, MATH-M 119, and STAT-I 301, in addition to MATH-I 153 and MATH-I 154.
The Math Department is encouraging advisors to make students aware of the differences between these two courses by disseminating the flow chart to students before the first day of class.
Both the MATH-I 153/154 course sequence and MATH-I 159 prepare students for the calculus courses MATH-I 221, MATH-I 231, MATH-I 241, MATH-I 165 and/or MATH-I 171.
MATH-I 159 - which is currently not offered at IU Indianapolis - combines MATH-I 153 and 154 into a one-semester course.
Students should take MATH-I 153 only if they placed into the course via the math placement test within the past year or if they successfully completed MATH-I 111 in the past year.
MATH-I 110 to MATH-I 153
A student may be allowed to submit a request for an exception to enroll in MATH-I 153 directly from MATH-I 110 if:
student has earned an A or A+ in the 110 course (grade must be posted by the Registrar) and
student is willing to enroll in specific sections of Math-I 153 that have PLTLs (Peer-Led Team Learning Leaders).
Enrollment in any other section would require a student to pass a MATH-I 111 proficiency test administered by the Department of Mathematical Sciences the week prior to the start of the next semester.
This exception request will be allowed one time and only in the following semester after earning the A or A+ (does not have to include summer semester). If a student withdraws from the MATH-I 153 course or is not successful in the attempted semester, the student will need to enroll in MATH-I 111 as their next course unless they are able to pass a MATH-I 111 proficiency test.
The MATH-I 111 test can only be taken one time.
MATH-I 130 is the mandatory course that needs to be taken prior to taking MATH-I 131 and/or MATH-I 132.
MATH-I 131 and MATH-I 132 may be taken in any order.
MATH-I 136 combines MATH-I 130 and MATH-I 132 into a one semester course. It is recommended that a student have a strong prerequisite or test score to enroll in this course. It is a rigorous course that is 6 hours in one semester. This course can only be attempted once.
Retake policy:
Students taking MATH-I 136 and earning a D+ or lower will not be allowed to retake MATH-I 136. MATH-I 130 and MATH-I 132 can be used to replace a low grade in MATH-I 136.
