Course information

Math course descriptions and syllabi for introductory courses may be found in the Course Descriptions section of the math department website. The courses below are common courses we receive questions about from students and advisors:

SCI-M 100

SCI-M 100 is a study skills course in which skills are practiced on developmental mathematical content, and is primarily for students with ALEKS scores below 20 and SAT scores below 500. This course will prepare students for MATH-I 110. See Advising Guidelines for Developmental Math for more information.

MATH-I 110 and MATH-I 111

Both MATH-I 110 (4 credits) and MATH-I 111 (4 credits) are intermediate algebra courses (second year high school algebra), but they are designed for different audiences.

The focus of MATH-I 110 will be to prepare liberal arts and business majors in intermediate algebra (second year high school algebra) for success in MATH-M 118, MATH-M 119, and STAT-I 301.

The focus of MATH-I 111 will be to prepare science, engineering, and technology majors in intermediate algebra (second year high school algebra) for success in MATH-I 153 and MATH-I 154 or MATH-I 159.

Although the content of the two courses is similar, the most significant difference will be in the rigor and the level of mastery required for passing the course.

A student who successfully completes MATH-I 111 will be prepared for MATH-M 118, MATH-M 119, and STAT-I 301, in addition to MATH-I 153 and MATH-I 154.

The Math Department is encouraging advisors to make students aware of the differences between these two courses by disseminating the flow chart (found in "Resources" below) to students before the first day of class.

MATH-I 153, MATH-I 154 and MATH-I 159

MATH-I 153 is a third year college algebra and trigonometry course (pre-calculus). MATH-I 154 is a continuation of this course.

MATH-I 159 combines these two courses into a one-semester course.  MATH-I 159 is best suited for students who have already learned this material successfully and simply need to review it.

Both the MATH-I 153/154 course sequence and MATH-I 159 prepare students for the calculus courses MATH-I 221, MATH-I 231, or MATH-I 165.

Students should take MATH-I 153 or MATH-I 159 only if they placed into the course via the math placement test within the past year or if they successfully completed MATH-I 111 in the past two years. Please note that students who take MATH-I 111 and wish to take MATH-I 159 must receive a "B" or above in MATH-I 111.

Retake policy: If a student earns a D+ or lower in MATH-I 159, they will be directed to take the 153/154 version of the course.  Students with a D+ or worse in 159 will not be allowed to retake MATH-I 159.  MATH-I 153 and 154 can be used to grade replace a low grade in MATH-I 159.
