My Internship Site
Ascend Indiana is a nonprofit business that is mainly focused on exposing recent Indiana college graduates to current job openings. Their mission is to provide economic opportunity for all. They do this by having people instead of AI post job openings and interact with employers to ensure that job seekers can find specified jobs for them while ensuring that employers have qualified employees.
My Tasks & Responsibilities:
Post roles to the network for employment seekers to have easy access to applications
Check links to see if they are broken or if a role is already filled
Find links via the network for a given list of highlighted roles so everyone in the office can see what roles are good for the network and working
Looop and KnowBe4 training videos
Make my progress report meeting guide and host those meetings
TEAMWORK & WORKPLACE CULTURE
At Ascend, employee work styles are fairly balanced in the sense that a lot of the work is hybrid so there is a mix of face-to-face interactions and online interactions. But even when at home, everyone for the most part is fairly easy to get into contact with-- whether that be on Slack, email, text, Teams, etc. This allows teamwork to be readily accessible and constantly used among group documents and throughout meetings.
The majority of work tends to be independent work, but there is a chunk of time expected for coworkers to come together and collaborate in meetings, celebrations, or group lunches-- which are encouraged.
There are multiple opportunities allotted for feedback and collaboration. This is especially true when workers come to the office on decided days, allowing them to work individually while being around each other if questions do pop up.
Personally, I do feel like a part of the Ascend Indiana team. Everyone has been welcoming right from the beginning of my internship to now, and I have been invited to multiple group activities/snack hours as well as offered an extended internship for the summer.
So far, I have observed that the site operates in a very business-casual manner in regards to staff interactions. Everything stays professional but no one has a problem inviting other coworkers out for lunch at The AMP, or chatting for a few moments, or even offering free drinks in the fifth-floor fridge. People are welcomed when they come to Ascend and given a nice card from other staff members if they leave.
This is similar to my ideal workplace culture as I enjoy working independently but also want a judgement-free environment that invites questions and feedback.
When I first came to Ascend, I was surprised about the level of understanding and concern everyone had for each other, and it feels genuine. Like how I might have internet issues and can receive flexible hours and assistance almost immediately. Or how I am struggling to find a job for the fall and my coworkers are more than happy to not only find options for me but also allow me to shadow other teams for more experience.
