IUPUI, Future 2026 Graduate:
Giovana Ortega
My name is Giovana Ortega and my major is Elementary Education! I am in my 3rd year and I plan to graduate in May, 2025. My concentration is Language Arts and I want to teach 2nd grade. I chose this major because I have always loved working with kids and believe it's my calling. Growing up, I never really saw teachers that look like me and I believe it's important for kids to see themselves in their teachers. I want to be that person that my students feel comfortable around and feel like they can trust me with anything. I will always keep in mind that some students don't receive love and care at home, so it's my responsibility to show them love at school!
Here I am with some of my students!
JLN is a 2 year scholarship that helps you build leadership and networking skills. During our sophomore year, we are required to take a 1 credit class that consists of meeting with a small group. In these groups, we get to learn more about ourselves like our strengths/weaknesses, and even learn new skills. During this year, we also had the opportunity to attend a conference and network with all kids of people from the city. Being apart of these small groups helped me prepare for these types of events and become more confident in my networking skills,
The second year of JLN is when we put everything we have learned into action. We are able to volunteer at any place that allows us to take on a leadership role. I decided to choose a learning center since I'm interested in becoming a teacher. This job allowed me to plan lesson plans and also teach them to my students! The second year in JLN really helps us advance into our career and helps us become prepared to graduate.
