About IUPUI’s W231 Professional Writing Skills

W231 Professional Writing Skills is offered by the Writing Program at IUPUI’s School of Liberal Arts. The course focuses on a student/community client partnership. Students in W231 reach out and connect with clients around Indianapolis then provide hundreds of hours of exploration, research, and analysis at no charge to community partners. The experience-based course combines academic rigor and community service; the curriculum challenges students to analyze and innovate then pitch practical recommendations to address workplace problems. In 2020, W231 students will partner with approximately 175 community partners and dedicate over 35,000 volunteer hours.​

​In 2019 and 2020 ePortfolios were integrated into seven sections of W231, with 170 students participating in ePortfolio sections. Students worked independently on course based ePortfolios and worked in teams to build micro-ePortfolios for their community clients. Micro-ePortfolios are project-based ePortfolios that integrate research, reports, and other information into a self-contained website. Micro-ePortfolios are highly portable and can be easily hyperlinked to emails, ePDPs, and professional portfolios. Each micro-ePortfolio website includes a:

• Formal Recommendation Report

• Review of Literature

• Local Study

• Contributor Names and Majors

Each W231 student writing consultant team is made up of 4-5 students. Teams create and distribute a local study that contains at least 50 respondents and invest about 200 volunteer hours (100 hours on research and 100 hours on analysis and writing the report).
