Community-engaged learning experiences domestically and abroad are predicated on engaging host communities with the best of intentions; but are good intentions enough to insure that all partners, including the host community benefit? How do we insure that across differences of culture, power and privilege, the needs and interests of host communities as well as learners are given equal voice and consideration in project design and implementation? How are we insuring that our students are learning the lessons we want them to learn about global citizenship rather than reinforcing negative stereotypes and inequities? IUPUI’s Working Group on Ethical Community Engagement in Global Learning has developed resources, guiding principles, and a pledge for students.
