In the past few years, several high schools in Indianapolis closed or were converted to middle schools. This consequently limited the number of high schools available to students near their homes resulting in busing students to other schools. In an effort to foster civic engagement among this population that experienced community disruption, the School of Social Work and Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG) collaborated with the students, predominantly Hispanic and African American youth from the west side of Indianapolis, to develop a student-led program for their peers. Under the Youth Health Summit program, these students identified a topic for which they would develop a program, conducted community assessments, identified and contracted a professional speaker, and developed content for the program, with some volunteers also speaking at the program. This presentation demonstrates how leveraging youth to help identify and solve problems can help bridge old and young, traditional and revolutionary, and pragmatic and creative.
