Improving Near Eastside Safety and Quality of Life

Jacob Purcell, Public Policy Institute, Center for Research, Inclusion, & Social Policy

Safety and the reduction of crime are integral to the quality of life of residents in the Near Eastside of Indianapolis. To discover strategies for combating these challenges, an exploratory, interdisciplinary study was conducted utilizing interviews of key stakeholders, a survey of residents, and a variety of secondary data sources. From this study, a multitude of interrelated factors contributing to crime in the area were identified, including issues surrounding health, social support, employment opportunities, economic immobility, and housing. The recognition of these factors created a foundation for community-based intervention strategies by the John Boner Neighborhood Centers.
