For this analysis, it was pertinent to remember the cultural and historical contexts of the times the obituaries were from.
This analysis examines how obituaries function as dynamic cultural texts, reflecting broader societal shifts in values, identity, and memorialization over time. Using social memory theory as a guiding framework, this study interprets changes in obituary structures, language, and representation across the selected years (1927, 1968, and 2020).
Content analysis was implemented as a further analytical technique to further understand why certain factors were present in some obituaries, while absent in others. I utilized this approach to make sense of the textual data by coding and categorizing information.
When contextualizing the content, I applied a the theoretical framework of social memory, diving into the ways that obituaries serve an important role in shaping a collective memory.
