Biscayne Village is located in northern Belize, just next to Crooked Tree, about 45 minutes north of Belize (City). It has approximately 200 people and sits just off the northern highway for easy access. The playground will be built in Biscayne and volunteers will lodge in Crooked Tree. For our pre-project excursions we will be based in San Ignacio, on the western border.

With a population of less than 400,000, Belize is a small country in Central America that is home to a diverse mix of cultures and ecosystems. As a former British Colony, English is the official language, though more than half also speak Belizean Creole (Kriol) and at least 30% identify as Mestizo and use Spanish as their primary language.

In addition to the Creole and Mestizo populations, Belize is home to large groups of indigenous Maya, Garifuna, German/Russian Mennonites, Chinese, and European populations.

The human diversity of Belize is matched only by the remarkable flora and fauna, perhaps because nearly 37% of the land in Belize falls under official protection and 60% is still forested.
